If you’re reading this, congratulations on your internship offer!
You’ve successfully completed step 1 of your journey. Summer internships can be an incredible opportunity to gain practical work experience, develop skills, and start building your professional network.
Read below for some advice on how to make the most of your internship.
Be confident and introduce yourself to everyone on your floor and team! When meeting your manager, discuss expectations for the role and your intentions for the summer.
Make sure to ask them about their preferred communication methods:
Establishing these practices at the beginning of your internship allows for more seamless communication as time goes on. Ask about your teams’ priorities and goals.
This will give you insight into how you can contribute meaningfully and be an asset as an intern. Try to tackle some of the team’s priorities that they aren’t able to make time for.
Try to shift your mindset from proving mode to learning mode. Break free from the idea that you need to prove yourself by figuring things out on your own and rather ask questions if you are unsure of something!
“Ask, never assume.”
If your manager assigns you a specific task and you’re confused about something they said, ask what they meant. It’s better to clarify concerns early on, rather than having to redo any work in the future.
Additionally, make sure to ask follow-up questions after sitting in on any team meetings. It’s a great way to learn more as well as show your manager than you are actively engaged with the discussion. No question is a stupid question; your manager will appreciate your curiosity!
Keep managers and other team members updated on any tasks you are assigned. Try to avoid situations where others are searching for updates on your work because they’re not sure where you are in the process. Reach out to your manager if you find yourself having a lot of free time and are looking for more responsibility.
Proofread all communication before sending anything out and keep emails professional! This helps you present yourself in the best light. Go into all meetings prepared to discuss the topic at hand and take notes on everything that is said. You never know when you might need to reference those notes.
Try to meet with as many people as possible at your place of work. I know this can be challenging but push yourself to get outside your comfort zone!
Make it a goal to say hello to someone new everyday. Reach out to people working in other departments that you’re interested in learning more about.
Most people will be happy to make time and help provide insights on anything you’re curious about. Research anybody you are meeting with beforehand and go into all meetings with questions prepared for them. Doing this helps them help you! Save the contact info of everyone you speak with as they may be helpful as you continue your professional journey. Use the template attached for a sample contact sheet. Also, don’t forget to connect with people you meet on LinkedIn and send thank you emails after your meetings.
Make a list and keep track of all the projects you work on over the summer. Note everything you worked on, who the project was for, and what the results were. This way, you will have a consolidated list of the projects you’ve completed that can be referenced for future use.
For example, when listing your internship on your resume or interviewing for future roles, you will be able to look at this list and speak to your achievements. Refer the attached template for a great way to organize your list.
At the beginning of the day, zoom out for a second and remind yourself that you’re an intern looking to learn. Don’t sweat the small stuff and remember to have fun with your work! Always put your most authentic self forward. Keep an open mind and say yes to different opportunities. Cultivate organic relationships with your team and rely on your fellow interns. Put 110% of your effort into everyday and be proud of everything you accomplish. Don’t underestimate yourself and the foundational base your college has provided you. You were selected for your role for a reason and you will do an amazing job. Time flies so make sure to enjoy your summer to the fullest and try your best!
When wrapping up your internship, make sure to ask your manager for any feedback they have on your work during your internship and to thank them for their guidance.
Congratulations once again and I wish you the best of luck!
