The 4 objectives of a 1x1
- Handle team issues: Address issues carefully to maintain respect and accountability.
- Monitor recurring problems in 1x1s and progressively move from coaching to mentoring, directing, and intervening as needed
- Handle people support or challenges carefully to maintain respect and accountability
- Don’t sit on performance issues
- Understand Nuance: Tailor your approach based on their experience and growth trajectory.
- Coach, mentor, direct, intervene: Consider the Skill/Will of each manager. Determine urgency and importance: Assess how crucial it is to resolve issues immediately.
- Role model & Reinforce the behaviors expected, like Manager Attributes and Our Operating Values for all managers.
Before your 1x1:
